Review of Disklok Security Device for VW T6/T6.1 Transporter Campervan
18th October 2022 | By Malcolm CarterHaving invested in a beautiful, shiny Volkswagen Campervan my thoughts quickly turned to protecting my new pride and joy.
The VW T6.1 T28 Highline Transporter has an alarm and immobiliser as standard, however, they are expensive, desirable vehicles, and after a spate of thefts off driveways in my local area, I thought that a steering wheel lock would be a worthwhile investment. I wanted a highly effective anti-theft security device, that also served as a visual deterrent - putting off most thieves before they even attempt to break into my campervan.
Disklok was the obvious choice as it is the toughest lock on the market and covers the entire steering wheel (most other locks can be easily removed by cutting the wheel rim).
The parcel arrived quickly from Carnoisseur, in decent protective packaging. I ordered a small size Disklok for my T6 as the steering wheel measures just under 38cm in diameter. I understand that all VW T5s and T6s use this size, although it would be worth double checking before placing your order:
- Small Diskloks are suitable for steering wheels up to 39cm in diameter
- Medium Diskloks are suitable for steering wheels between 39cm and 41.5cm in diameter
- Large Diskloks are suitable for steering wheels between 41.5cm and 44cm in diameter
The package included the Disklok, keys, instructions and a window warning sticker. My first impression was that it is quite big and bulky and a little heavy, so to be honest I was a little apprehensive, however the reality is that the solid construction is exactly why this was the perfect choice. Once I became accustomed with the way it works, I very quickly got used to handling it, and it soon became part of my daily routine - taking no more than a few seconds to unlock it every morning and lock it every evening.
The VW T6 Transporter is not short on space, so storing the Disklok steering lock when not in use is easy - it sits neatly in a rear compartment in the camper van. The tough storage bag is ultra-helpful for neatly stowing the device and carrying it to and from the vehicle.
I also bought the optional steering wheel cover which, although it just looks like a frilly pair of knickers when you open the packet, is actually well worth adding to your order. It slips neatly over the steering wheel and protects the leather rim from any inadvertent scuffs or scrapes whilst fitting or removing the device.
Minor point, but there are 3 keys included. If, like me, you have a habit of mislaying your keys then this could be a godsend!
The Disklok opens up like a clam shell, into two semi circles - you fold out the strong arm with locking mechanism. Slide the left half of the Disklok over the steering wheel, then close the right half and push in the locking mechanism. Simple! Safe and secure in a matter of seconds. The Disklok is designed to spin when attacked, so it shouldn't be fitted too tight to the steering wheel, and the strong arm stops you from being able to rotate it completely. It really is hard to see how a thief could possibly remove the Disklok without a lot of time and a lot of heavy duty equipment - I think most of them wouldn't even bother trying.
The Disklok came in a silver finish, perfect for my Reflex Silver VW T6 Transporter. My van has a Volkswagen multifunction steering wheel and, despite being a large van, the small Disklok was a perfect fit with enough depth available for quite a chunky steering wheel.
If you are looking for a steering wheel lock for your van, campervan or motorhome, then I would highly recommend Disklok. Fitting a steering wheel lock might seem a bit old fashioned, but they really do work and Disklok is consistently voted the best on the market. It's a small price to pay for added security and a bit of extra piece of mind.
